These yellowish plaques are deposit of cholesterol that develop on or around the eyelids skin. Some xanthelasmas are associated with high cholesterol levels or other lipid disorders, but can also occur in otherwise healthy individuals.

Xanthelasmas can vary in size from very small to several centimeters, affecting the whole eyelid. The size will determine the need for local flaps, or even skin grafts, to correct the affected area.

Surgical correction can be performed on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia or general as appropriate. Lipid control is essential to reduce the risk of recurrence.
