Dermatochalasis refers to the presence of excess skin in the eyelid. It can result from natural aging, sun damage, or genetic factors. Excessive skin can obstruct vision and cause functional issues such as headaches from frontal muscle strain, incorrect head position leading to neck and spine problems, and the recurrent need to lift the eyelid with one’s hands, which can interfere with personal and social quality of life.
Surgical removal of excessive skin (and eventually small fat bags) can be done under local anesthesia. However, when larger fat bags are present, especially in the lower eyelid, sedation or general anesthesia may be preferable. Surgery is typically done on an outpatient basis.
